Elderton Lodge was built in the latter half of the 18th century, using local estate brick faced with cobbles from the North Norfolk coast, just 4 miles away.
Originally a shooting lodge for Gunton Hall, ancestral home of the Barons of Suffield, it has accommodated nobility and royalty among its guests. King Edward VII was a frequent visitor to Gunton – indeed, the restored tower on the estate was built as a look-out for the arrival of the royal train at Gunton Station – and in earlier days, as the Prince of Wales, he is supposed to have enjoyed secret assignations with Lillie Langtry, the celebrated “Jersey Lily”, at the Lodge.
